About Nashil Petcel Kazembe

Nashil Pichen Kazembe was born in 1932 in Kaputa, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and died in 1991. He taught himself banjo and then guitar as a child.

In 1953 he went to work in the mines in South Africa, where he formed his first band, the Bantu Negroes. He settled in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1958 and worked with Peter Tsotsi in groups such as the Equator Sound Band and the Eagles Lupopo Band. Later he worked with Super Mazembe as a producer and manager and returned to Zambia in the 1980s to record more albums.

His best known song is A-Phiri Anabwera. His name is spelled in several ways, including Nashil Pichen Kazembe, Pitchen and Petcel.
