How top stories are selected

We publish “Top stories selected from our monitored sources”. This is not a definitive ranking of everything trending worldwide.

Method version top-stories-v1
40%

Breadth of independent reporting

How many separate reporting origins cover the event. Two sites carrying the same wire dispatch count as one origin.

30%

Rise in independent coverage

How fast coverage grew over a recent window. This needs history from earlier editions. Until enough history exists we do not claim a “trending” measure, we use the label “Top stories”, and the other three parts are re-weighted.

20%

Freshness

Newer events score higher, falling to zero after 24 hours.

10%

Editorial judgement

Our judgement of public interest, between 0 and 1. It is labelled as judgement, not measured popularity.

Each part is normalised to a 0 to 1 scale. Zambian and international candidates are ranked separately to fill the five-and-fifteen edition split. Duplicates are removed before scoring. The inputs, calculation time and method version are stored with each edition so the ranking can be reproduced.

We never invent view counts, shares or trend scores. A separate “Most read on Challecious Music” list will appear only when real site analytics are available, with bot filtering, and it will not be presented as worldwide popularity.
